How It Works
Members participate in the running of Sierra Preta through a €30 annual fee and by donating part of the Biochar they produce to a common pot. By being a member, you receive training from our team on how to operate the kiln, and we organise the transport of our kilns to you land.
Kiln Delivery & Setup
After agreeing on a delivery date, we’ll transport the kiln directly to your land. You can use the kiln to process your pruning residues, turning them into valuable Biochar.
Training & Support
You’ll receive comprehensive training materials and hands-on guidance during your first Biochar production run. Our team is available to provide ongoing support, ensuring you’re confident in using the kiln independently.
Independent Operation
After the initial training, if you’re ready, we’ll leave the kiln with you for as long as you need to process your wood residues. You’ll have the freedom to run the kiln as much as possible, maximizing the use of our equipment.
Contribution to the Common Pot
As part of the Sierra Preta community, we ask that you donate part of the Biochar you produce to our common pot. For the first production run, we request 2/3 of the Biochar be donated. After that, we ask for half of the Biochar produced in each subsequent run.
Minimum Material Requirement
To optimize efficiency, we require a minimum of six kiln runs' worth of material, approximately 3-4 tonnes of pruning residues, before we can agree to have one of our kilns on a land to produce Biochar.
Community Collaboration
We encourage neighboring landowners to collaborate by consolidating their wood waste at a single location to meet the required volume.
Members Benefits
By becoming a member of Sierra Preta, you’re not only gaining access to our kilns and expertise, but you’re also contributing to a larger mission of sustainable land management, renewable energy, and environmental conservation.
